Last evening, a crowd of brethren and visitors descended on the village of Hursley—not, for once, to admire its famous chimney pots, but to witness Merdon Lodge No. 5135 conduct a Third-Degree Ceremony. Once the scene had been set, Bro. Nick Firrell answered his questions with quiet authority and was duly raised by W. Bro. Michael McLachan, who bravely carried out most of the work himself. Nick’s father was a Mason for many years in Hong Kong and, although Bro. Firrell Snr was unable to be present, Nick was presented with his apron: a particularly meaningful family connection.

The Tyler, W. Bro. Sandy, was temporarily released from his natural habitat outside the door to present the Traditional History. Having discovered warmth and an audience, he then attempted to prolong his stay by launching into an excellent explanation of the Working Tools. His plan very nearly succeeded, but order was eventually restored and he was returned to the cold.

The Royal Arch Narrative was delivered by W. Bro. John Brooks, with considerably less resistance to leaving the floor.

The V.O., W. Bro. Phil Heath, brought news from Province. Among the items in his report was the APGM’s request that all WMs and Wardens make every effort to visit other Lodges. The APGM also stated—or possibly commanded—that ALL brethren should ENJOY their Masonry. So that’s us told. Enjoyment is now compulsory.

The Lodge Secretary, W. Bro. Mark Carter, and his daughter Emily recently completed a tandem skydive to raise money for Guide Dogs UK. The attached photograph shows Mark leaving the aircraft while not screaming. Well done to them both. You can view a link to Emily's Just Giving page by clicking below:

If you have not visited Merdon Lodge before, do consider coming along. It is a small, friendly Lodge and you will be made most welcome. Once the Secretary has both feet safely back on the ground, you can contact him for further details.

Dinner is reviewed separately under ‘A Square Meal’—because even compulsory enjoyment requires proper catering.
